Studies on the Total Carbon Dioxide and pH of Blood Plasma in Children

Abstract
Measurments of total carbon dioxide and pH of blood plasma were made on 57 normal children and 7 diarrheal children. Normal subjects were divided in to 6 groups according to their age.
group 1, age of less than one year; group 2, less than 2 years; group 3, age group of between 25
years; group 4, age group of between 511 years; group 5, between 1120 years; and group 6, more than
20 years old.
The results were summarized in table 7 as follows:
1. Plasma pH: There was no differences between age groups, values being 7.337.45
2. Total corbon dioxide: AIthough there was no significant differences between age groups, however there was a tendency to slightly increase with the age; group i showed 22.4 and group 6 26.7mEq/1.
3. Bicaibonate: In group 6 the value was ,25. 4mEq/1 and it was higher ¢¥than other groups.
4. pCO2 group 6 showed higher value than other groups.
5. In diarrheal children, there was metabolic acidosis and the value were pH 7.26, total CO2 13.5 mEq/1 and PCO2 29.9 mmHg.
